Closing the Opportunity Gap!
Nashwa Emam, Berkeley High School
Closing the Opportunity Gap is aimed at leveling the playing field for some of our most vulnerable students. The focal students are those that do not have an IEP but are the most at risk of dropping out as indicated by the transition rubric and the Academic Support Index that is collected and determined during the transition from middle to high school. The majority of these students do not have the financial means to experience different types of learning opportunities. Many are first generational students who do not have exposure to the various career options that exist. The majority are students of color and/or English language learners. Our goal is to provide unique and innovative field trips and community building activities to strengthen the connection between students and school to increase the graduation rates.

Congratulations to Our 2018 Recipients
